Bonativo Online Farmers’ Market Opens In Amsterdam

March 18, 2015 by Tim

Online famers’ market Bonativo (www.bonativo.nl) has opened up another location in Amsterdam. After Berlin and London the Dutch capital is the third European metropolis to launch after only three months of operation. The young company gives users direct access to locally produced food and at the same time supports independent producers by extending their customer base. The groceries are delivered straight to the customer’s door. Bonativo goes online in Amsterdam with 75 suppliers and around 500 diverse products. With that the company is now working with a total of 150 local producers in Berlin, London and Amsterdam.

Christian Eggert, Co-founder of Bonativo, explains: “Amsterdam is an interesting market for our service. The Dutch capital is a quick adopter of urban trends, especially when it comes to food. The importance of agriculture and honest products is in the heart of the Dutch people. The fact that we were able to win 75 producers by launch time confirms our position in Amsterdam.”

At the heart of Bonativo’s business model are the producers. “We help small, local businesses to remain sustainable. We provide them with a platform and visibility, to help them reach a much wider audience. Our platform has been designed as a central space for food-makers and consumers to meet and share the things they care about”, says Irena Chloè Angelov, City Manager Amsterdam.

In 2015 the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, BioFach, has presented the Netherlands as the country of the year. According to estimates by Bionext, an umbrella organisation for the Dutch organic industry, the turnover generated from organic food in the Netherlands increased to 1.07 billion EUR in 2013. The organic sector is expected to grow by 6-8 percent as a whole and 9 percent just in natural food specialist stores.

Online sales of organic food however still remain under one percent. Bonativo’s service is addressing a growing multi-billion euro market opportunity in Europe alone which has not yet moved online.

How it works:
Customers select locally produced foods from an extensive range around 600 products on www.bonativo.nl. Alongside detailed descriptions of each product, the website provides insights about the people behind the food. Orders are collected by producers the next day and stored in a central warehouse. Individual orders are then delivered directly to the customer’s doorstep at the desired time. Users pay online by credit card, PayPal and via iDeal in the Netherlands.

About Bonativo:
Behind Bonativo there are founder Christian Eggert and his team of 20 employees. The service is available in Berlin, London and now Amsterdam. The young company is supported by Rocket Internet.
